How Real Sensory Kids "Stress Tested" Our Clothes
Behind the Seams: How Real Sensory Kids "Stress Tested" Our Clothes
Designing for sensory kids is high-stakes work. If a "normal" t-shirt is slightly scratchy, a child might fidget. If a sensory child’s t-shirt is scratchy, it can derail their entire day.
We knew we couldn't just guess. We needed proof.
So, before we launched, we did something terrifying: We sent our early prototypes to families across New Zealand and asked them to be brutally honest.
We didn't want polite feedback. We wanted to know if these clothes could survive the playground, the spa, and, most importantly, the sensory nervous system.
The Backstory: Why We Couldn't Just Buy "Soft" Clothes
Before aszo began, mornings in my home were a battlefield. My daughter’s sensory system was simply too good at its job. It felt everything.
I bought every "soft" brand out there. Every single one was too stiff, too itchy, or had a seam that felt like barbed wire to her. I was frustrated, surrounded by a pile of returns, and still had a child who physically couldn't get dressed for school.
So, I stopped buying and started building. One call to Jade, one visit to borrow my Mum’s sewing machine, and the first aszo sample was born.
It was an instant hit in our house. But we know that no two neurospicy kids are the same. What works for one might trigger another.
That is why we launched The Wear Test.
The Verdict from the Toughest Critics (The Kids)
We sent samples to kids who feel it all. They wore them to school, to the supermarket, and even to bed. Here is what the experts had to say:
"It feels like PJs, but not PJs."
The holy grail of sensory clothing. Kids want the comfort of sleepwear without looking like they rolled out of bed.
"I like that it doesn’t scratch my neck."
This was the most common feedback. By removing the neck tag and flattening the collar seam, we eliminated the #1 trigger for morning meltdowns.
"She wore it in the spa for an hour."
One tester loved the sensory input of the fabric so much that she refused to take it off, even in the water! (While we don't recommend spa days for longevity, we take the compliment!)
The Verdict from the Parents
For us parents, sensory-friendly clothing isn't just about fabric. It’s about sanity.
-
Less Morning Stress: "It’s one less battle before school. I handed it to her, and she just put it on."
-
Durability: "Finally, clothes that still look good after a wash." (Because we know sensory kids play hard).
-
Independence: "She calls it her 'comfy dress' and puts it on herself."
We Didn't Get It Perfect (So We Fixed It)
The most valuable part of this process wasn't the praise, it was the critiques. Families told us exactly what needed tweaking, and we listened.
-
The Seams: Some seams still felt a little "bulky" to our hyper-sensitive testers. We smoothed them out.
-
The Waistband: One prototype was a bit too snug for comfort. We adjusted the tension.
-
The Colour: Kids had strong opinions on aesthetics. We leaned into their favourites.
Each round of feedback made our clothes softer, smarter, and more "meltdown-proof."
Why This Matters
"Sensory-friendly" isn't a marketing buzzword for us. It is personal.
Kids deserve clothes that let them get on with being kids. Clothes that do not distract them, itch them, or make them want to rip them off. And parents deserve mornings that start with calm, not a clothing battle.
Our first official pieces, starting with our relaxed fit, drop-sleeve tee, are the result of this testing. They are kid-tested, parent-approved, and ready for the real world.
